Seasonal demand does not announce itself gently. Appointment books fill within a fortnight, and the same stylists who had slack capacity in the quiet months find themselves quoting a four-week wait. Hair supply behaves the same way: orders placed at the moment of peak arrive after the peak, at prices set by peak demand.
1. The Peak Has Two Waves
The first wave is installation demand, concentrated in the weeks before holiday and event dates. The second wave arrives five to seven weeks later as maintenance, and it is usually underestimated because it lands when attention has moved on. Studios that pre-buy only for installations run short of repair material exactly when returning clients turn up.
2. Sequencing the Pre-Buy
Work backwards from the date the book fills rather than forwards from today. Installation stock should be on the shelf at least one reorder cycle before the peak begins, which in practice means ordering when the calendar still looks unremarkable. Repair and maintenance formats can be ordered a little later, because their consumption rate is predictable from the previous cycle.
3. What to Hold in Each Phase
- Pre-peak: long-length bulk and prepared loc strands in the natural tones, bought early enough to absorb a shipping delay without affecting the book.
- Peak: consume the pre-buy and hold only a small top-up buffer in one or two colours, purchased at standard rather than rush rates.
- Post-peak: repair strands, retightening tools and maintenance materials, which turn over steadily as returning clients arrive.
4. Protecting the Chair, Not Just the Shelf
Stock planning and appointment planning are the same problem seen twice. If a pre-buy lands late, the installation cannot happen regardless of how many clients are waiting, and the appointment moves into a week that had been reserved for something else. Set the pre-buy trigger from the appointment book, and the season stops being a gamble.
The Seasonal Pre-Buy Bundle
A fast-turn Indian bulk, a hand-made prepared loc line and an interlock repair format, chosen so one pre-buy covers both the volume peak and the maintenance wave that follows it.
