Texture is a memory, not a finish. Every hair product carries a curl pattern that was set during processing, and heat is the tool that either respects that memory or destroys it. Promising a client a temporary style is safe; promising a permanent change to a loc extension is not.
1. Why Curly Tips Revert
Curl in processed hair is a physical set held by the cuticle structure. Moisture and heat together relax that set. A curly-tip loc asked to straighten will usually revert at the first wash โ which is good news for the client, and a problem if the stylist sold it as a lasting change.
2. Where Heat Is Reasonable
- Light smoothing on straight or wavy formats: low risk, quick, reversible.
- Bending ends for a bob shape: acceptable on remy material with a heat-protectant step and moderate temperature.
- Repeated high-heat straightening of tight curls: avoid. The cuticle loses elasticity and the material starts to look dry at the ends long before it fails structurally.
3. Price the Styling Promise
If a service includes restyling between retightening appointments, that is chair time โ and it belongs in the price. Salons that quietly absorb twenty minutes of heat styling into every maintenance visit are discounting their own maintenance plan without noticing.
