Bulk human hair gets quoted in grams and installed in strands. That mismatch is where most salon ordering errors begin - and an error made at order time shows up weeks later as a half-finished installation and an emergency air-freight invoice.
1. The Two Units Wholesalers Quote In
Weighed bulk - afro kinky bulk, braiding bulk, twist bulk - is sold by mass. Individual loc extensions and sister loc strands are sold by count, because each strand is a finished handmade piece with its own gauge. If you order one and plan in the other, you will either over-buy material you cannot use or under-buy and stall mid-installation.
2. Estimating Per-Installation Mass
Weigh, do not guess. The reliable method is a one-section calibration:
- Complete a single section of the installation at your normal density.
- Weigh the hair used for that section.
- Multiply by the total section count, then add a waste allowance for trimming and re-work.
Illustrative example: if one section consumes a set mass and the installation uses a defined number of sections, the total requirement is simply that mass multiplied out, plus your margin. The specific numbers are client-specific - head size, density, and desired fullness all move the result - which is exactly why the calibration step has to be done on real work rather than taken from a table.
3. Strand-Count Math for Loc Extensions
For pre-formed loc and sister loc extensions, mass is not the useful unit - gauge is. Fine micro-gauge work uses far more strands to cover the same scalp area than large-gauge work, because the grid is denser. Before ordering, fix two numbers: the target gauge, and the approximate number of locs you intend to install across the scalp. The strand count follows from the grid, not from the client's shoe size or the pack size the supplier prefers.
4. Buffer Stock and Reorder Triggers
Running a salon on just-in-time hair ordering only works if lead time is genuinely short. Keep a defined reserve of your two highest-frequency gauges or bulk weights, and set a reorder trigger at the level where the reserve can still cover one full installation. That single habit removes the emergency-order line item from your year.
