Two installations can use the same gauge, the same root grid and the same length, and still age completely differently. The variable is the finish - what happens at the end of each loc. And the finish is what clients actually notice six weeks later, when they decide whether to rebook.
1. Why Finishing Drives Rebooking
Clients rarely evaluate an installation on the day it is done. They evaluate it during the weeks that follow, when shrinkage settles, the style meets water and normal washing, and the ends either hold definition or collapse into a shape they did not choose. Finishing is the part of the installation that determines which of those two futures they get.
2. Straight-Tip Characteristics
Straight-tip interlocked micro extensions produce the cleanest grid geometry. Because the tip is straight, the loc reads as a continuous line from root to end, which makes the installation look deliberate and precise - particularly valuable on clients wearing very fine micro-gauge grids where any irregularity is visible.
The trade-off is stylistic rather than structural: straight tips give less natural curl variation, so they can look engineered next to looser natural textures unless the gauge and density are matched carefully.
3. Curl-End Characteristics
Curly-end locs finish with a built-in curl, which softens the transition between the loc body and the visible end. That softening matters most on clients whose natural ends curl, because the extension end then behaves like the rest of the hair instead of terminating abruptly.
Blended curl-tip formats sit between the two: the strand is interlocked like a micro dreadlock, but finished with a curl tip. This is usually the best option when a client wants grid precision at the root and a softer visual read at the end.
4. Matching Finishing to Maintenance Habits
Three questions during consultation settle the choice:
- How often will you wash? Frequent washers benefit from finishes that hold shape after water exposure.
- Do you wrap or pin at night? Nightly protection supports more defined finishes and slows visible wear.
- What do you want the ends to do? Some clients want a uniform, deliberate line; others want ends that read as natural.
Because curl-tip and straight-tip extensions age differently, the refresh interval you quote should reflect the finish rather than a fixed number for every client. A realistic interval builds trust; a generic one produces the call that the ends have changed and the client is unhappy - which is the call that ends a rebooking cycle.
