Boho braids are sold as a look, but they are built two completely different ways. One route starts with loose bulk hair and builds the texture by hand. The other starts with pre-formed feather-tip crochet hair and skips most of the prep. Comparing them on price per pack is meaningless; comparing them on cost per head, including prep time, is not.
1. What You Are Actually Buying
Virgin bulk is priced for its raw material honesty: intact cuticle, aligned direction, no chemical stripping. Feather-tip crochet hair is priced for its processing: the hair is shaped, tapered and finished so the ends read as a natural curl without hand-building.
That means the bulk route front-loads cost into labour and back-loads value into longevity, while the feather-tip route front-loads cost into the product and saves labour. Neither is cheaper in the abstract.
2. The Cost per Head Calculation
Start with packs consumed per head for the density you are serving, multiply by pack price, then add preparation minutes valued at your loaded hourly rate. Run the same calculation for both routes on the same client profile.
In practice the pattern repeats: at high density and long length the virgin bulk route usually narrows the gap because pack count scales more slowly than prep time, while at shorter lengths and lighter density the feather-tip route wins on total chair time. Your own numbers will differ by density, length and stylist speed — which is why the calculation has to be run per service tier, not once for the studio.
3. Longevity Changes the Answer
A route that saves twenty minutes in the chair but needs a repair appointment at week four has not saved anything. Unprocessed bulk with intact cuticle direction typically holds its pattern longer and tangles less at the take-down, which shows up as fewer complaint appointments.
Ask specifically about cuticle direction when you buy bulk. Hair that has been mechanically blended without regard to direction will mat at the root within weeks regardless of how well it was installed.
4. How to Quote Both
Offer the look, not the material. Quote a fixed price for the finished boho style, then choose the route internally based on the client's density, length and budget. Keeping the quote consistent while the supply route flexes is what protects margin when a supplier's pack price moves.
